Scruffy’s Shiraz

Mild temperatures at the beginning of the season provided a long ripening period which allowed for slow even ripening and the development of high quality fruit.

Once harvested, small parcels of fruit were destemmed and chilled. Fermentation took place in small static fermenter with the wine pressed out into a conmbination of French and American Oak barrels for 12 months maturation.

Winemakers Comments

Dense crimson in colour with youthful garnet hues. Aromas of blood plum and red berries entwined with hints of spice and vanillin. A full flavoured palate laden with juicy upfront fruit characters of plum and blackberry. Ripe, silky tannins with traces of black pepper and oak complete the palate.

Scruffy’s Shiraz Testimonial

Betty Ann, A shiraz drinker from Canada

“I am from the province of Nova Scotia in Canada, and in the 1980s, the wine industry was just starting. Mainly, we were a province of beer drinkers. As I knew that a knowledge of wine was important for hospitality events in embassies overseas, I took my first wine tasting course. There I discovered the grape varietal which started me on a life-long quest: shiraz.

I have been posted in 11 countries around the world and have travelled to many more. I try to do wine tastings in almost every country I travel to (including Australia); however I will almost always go back to my first grape love – shiraz. I will only buy shiraz from two countries: Australia and Israel. French syrah has absolutely no appeal for me.

I am now retired from the diplomatic corp and returned to my home province. I recently visited my local Nova Scotia Liquor  store and was surprised to see a good variety of Australian wines. I was drawn to your 2018 Riverina Scruffy’s Shiraz Single Vineyard from Nugan Estate. I opened it and and after my first taste, said out loud, “Holy crap, this is outstanding!”

I never read the wine notes on bottles before I taste, as I do not wish to be mentally influenced before I taste, so I read it after. I now understand why this shiraz is more complex than usual – it is so rich tasting with lots of dark red fruit, and so well balanced that you don’t notice that the alcohol level is 14%! I realize that this wine is not one of your higher end wines, but it certainly tastes like it!

Kudos to you and Scruffy for creating such an awesome and delightful wine. There will be more bottles of this wine in my cellar shortly!”

Wine & Food Match

This wine lends itself to a variety of meat dishes. The spicy overtones work well with Asian and Indian foods, as well as complimenting the more traditional flavours of roast lamb or slow cooked beef cheeks.
